Mock Draft 1.0

It is that time of the year football fans. The National Football League
season is over and it is time to construct teams for 2012. Some teams in
The NFL will need more work than others. You cannot think about the
season until we have The NFL Draft in April. Before the draft we will
have The Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana showcasing the best
collegiate talent in the country as they strive to become professional
athletes. This is my first mock draft based on the status of these
players leading into the combine.

1. Indianapolis-Andrew Luck-Quarterback-Stanford
If there ever
was a sure thing in the draft this pick is it. Indianapolis Colts owner
Jim Irsay has already come out publicly and expressed interest in Andrew
Luck. Many scouts are calling Luck the best pro prospect since another
Stanford quarterback John Elway entered The NFL in 1983.

2. St. Louis-Matt Kalil-Offensive Tackle-Southern California
It
will be interesting to see what The St. Louis Rams do with this pick.
With Luck being the first overall selection, some teams could get
desperate to trade up in order to have a chance to draft Baylor
quarterback Robert Griffin III. If The Rams are willing to talk turkey
they could be able to stock pile draft picks for this year and in 2013.

3. Minnesota-Riley Reiff-Offensive Tackle-Iowa
Minnesota
Viking head coach Leslie Frazier got his franchise quarterback last year
in Christian Ponder and he needs someone up front to protect him.

4. Cleveland-Robert Griffin III-Quarterback-Baylor
If another team doesn’t trade up in front of The Cleveland Browns,
then Browns President Mike Holmgren will not only get a quarterback, but
he will also have a player that could spark some life into the fan
base.

5. Tampa Bay-Luke Kuechly-Inside Linebacker-Boston College
This
is a little bit of a reach, but The Tampa Bay Buccaneers desperately
need some leadership on the defensive side of the football that they
have lacked since releasing Derrick Brooks. Luke Kuechly is a hard
worker which is something that new head coach Greg Schiano covets.

6. Washington-Justin Blackmon-Wide Receiver-Oklahoma State
The
Redskins may trade up because they are in the market for a quarterback,
but if they stay put Blackmon is the best player available and he would
fill a big need at wide receiver..

7. Jacksonville-Morris Claiborne-Cornerback-LSU
The Jaguars have some holes on both sides of the ball, but Claiborne
is a good start as far as helping to get the secondary turned around.

8. Carolina-Dre Kirkpatrick-Cornerback-Alabama
The
Panthers got their big playmaker on offense last year in quarterback
Cam Newton and now it is time to start working on the defense.

9. Miami-Quinton Coples-Defensive End-North Carolina
Miami
is another team that could trade up for a quarterback, but in a
division with Tom Brady you can never have enough players that can rush
the passer.

10. Buffalo-Johnathan Martin-Offensive Tackle-Stanford
Buffalo
just opened up the vault to pay quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and a
quarterback cannot throw when he is looking up at the sky.

11. Kansas City-Trent Richardson-Running Back-Alabama
This is real cut and dry, The Kansas City Chiefs lost running back
Jamaal Charles last season to a torn ACL and Richardson can fill that
void as he is the best player available.

12. Seattle-Melvin Ingram-Outside Linebacker-South Carolina
A few years ago, The Seattle Seahawks drafted outside linebacker
Aaron Curry in the first round and it didn’t pan out. Melvin Ingram is
more of a pass rusher that Seahawk head coach Pete Carroll likes.

13. Arizona-Devon Still-Defensive Tackle-Penn State
Another
situation where a team will take the best player available. Arizona
Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt knows that victories start in the
trenches and Devon Still gives them some beef up front.

14. Dallas-Janoris Jenkins-Cornerback-North Alabama
The
Dallas Cowboys are finally tired of seeing cornerback Terrance Newman
get cooked every Sunday by wide receivers in The NFC East.

15. Philadelphia-Courtney Upshaw-Outside Linebacker-Alabama
The Philadelphia Eagles must upgrade their linebacking core.
Courtney Upshaw would help to provide leadership and give them a proven
winner on that side of the ball.

16. New York Jets-David DeCastro-Guard-Stanford
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan wants to get back to the running
game that made this team successful in his first two years in Gotham.
Former Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sporano is the new offensive
coordinator and between him and Ryan, they will make sure that The Jets
get off of the bus running the football. This is the first step towards
that is rebuilding the offensive line.

17. Cincinnati-Alfonzo Dennard-Cornerback-Nebraska
Cornerback Nate Clements is 32-years old so this selection is a no-brainer.

18. San Diego-Kendall Wright-Wide Receiver-Baylor
The
San Diego Chargers will more than likely lose wide receiver Vincent
Jackson to free agency and they need to keep quarterback Philip Rivers
happy.

19. Chicago-Michael Floyd-Wide Receiver-Notre Dame
The
Chicago Bears really wanted Kendall Wright, but Michael Floyd is not a
bad second option. The Bears have a franchise quarterback in Jay Cutler
and they will finally will give him a formidable target on the outside.

20. Tennessee-Nick Perry-Defensive End-Southern California
Not only is Nick Perry the best player available, but he has
tremendous pass rushing skills which is something that The Tennessee
Titans lacked in 2011.

21. Cincinnati-Lamar Miller-Running Back-Miami
Running back Cedric Benson is a free agent and Lamar Miller can step in immediately and become a starter.

22. Cleveland-Mohamed Sanu-Wide Receiver-Rutgers
The
Browns drafted a quarterback in RG3 and now he needs someone to throw
too. Mohamed Sanu might be the most physical wide receiver in this
year’s draft class.

23. Detroit-Mike Adams-Offensive Tackle-Ohio State
The
Detroit Lions finally made the playoffs and they did it by keeping
quarterback Matthew Stafford healthy. By The Lions drafting Mike Adams
they are looking to keep that trend going for the next few years.

24. Pittsburgh-Stephen Gilmore-Cornerback-South Carolina
Ike
Taylor is the best cornerback in The NFL if you ask Ike Taylor. Taylor
got “barbequed” in a playoff loss to The Denver Broncos when Denver was
only sending one receiver out in the progression. Stephen Gilmore is a
physical corner who fits the mold of The Pittsburgh Steelers.

25. Denver-Dwayne Allen-Tight End-Clemson
Denver Broncos President John Elway has finally bought in to
“Tebowmania”. For quarterback Tim Tebow to succeed in The Rocky
Mountains he will need more options to throw to. Dwayne Allen is an
athletic tight end that will give The Broncos more options in the red
zone.

26. Houston-Mark Barron-Safety-Alabama
The front seven of
The Houston Texans is one of the best in the league. Now The Texans will
look to have that same reputation in the secondary.

27. New England-Whitney Mercilus-Defensive End-Illinois
Hopefully for the sake of sanity in Boston, New England Patriots
head coach Bill Belichick will decide to keep this pick instead of
trading it. The Patriots missed out a few years ago on an opportunity to
draft Clay Matthews and they really have not been been able to put
pressure on quarterbacks. Whitney Mercilus only has one year as starter,
but he would be an upgrade to the pass rush up in Foxboro.

28. Green Bay-Jared Crick-Defensive End-Penn State
In
2011, The Green Bay Packers lacked the ability to put pressure on the
quarterback with the defensive line. Jared Crick missed most of his
final season at Nebraska when he suffered a torn pectoral muscle and the
production of that defensive unit showed. Crick should be able to come
in immediately and contribute in Green Bay.

29. Baltimore-Michael Brockers-Defensive Tackle-LSU
General
Manager Ozzie Newsome loves to draft the best athlete available and
typically his first round picks are starters for The Baltimore Ravens
for a decade.

30. San Francisco-Alshon Jeffery-Wide Receiver-South Carolina
Alshon Jeffery’s draft stock has dropped due to questions about his
weight and speed, but The San Francisco 49ers need to upgrade the wide
receiver position and taking a chance on Jeffery would not hurt.

31. New England-Jerel Worthy-Defensive Tackle-Michigan State
If The Patriots decide to keep this pick, it would be a boost to the defensive line.

32. New York Giants- Coby Fleener-Tight End-Stanford
New
York Giants General Manager Jerry Reese typically will pick the best
athlete. His philosophy must change as The Giants lost two tight ends in
The Super Bowl. Coby Fleener runs great routes and he will become a
security blanket for quarterback Eli Manning.

Since Steve Spurrier came to South Carolina he has kept some of the best talent in the sate instead of letting it go to Florida and Alabama.
