Pure Stupidity

Jim Tomsula

In a classic example of cutting off your name to spite your face, the San Francisco 49ers have fired Jim Tomsula after one year as their head coach. Tomsula has been with the 49ers since 2007 as he served as the team’s defensive line coach for eight years before being promoted to the position of head coach last year. Tomsula’s firing comes on the heels of the 49ers firing Jim Harbaugh last January as their head coach which was a moved that received a ton of criticism. In four years as the 49ers head coach, Harbaugh never had a losing record and he led San Francisco to the NFC Championship in 2012. But Harbaugh and Niners general manager Trent Baalke were never on the same page which led to his termination. Tomsula appeared to be on the same page with Baalke, but the productivity was not there on the field this season as San Francisco finished with a record of 6-10, which was their identical record in the previous year that Harbaugh took over. And the firing of Tomsula after the 49ers bad season just makes the dismissal of Harbaugh last January just appear to be that more foolish.

Jim Harbaugh

In four years as the 49ers head coach, Harbaugh had a record of 40-19-1, but his tension with Baalke led to him getting his walking papers. Habraugh would land on his feet as he went back to alma mater. Whereas the 49ers didn’t want Harbaugh’s services, the University of Michigan was very happy to bring him into the fold to be their head football coach. And after a 5-7 season in 2014 under former head football coach Brady Hoke, it didn’t take Harbaugh that long to turn things around at Michigan as the squad just capped off their first 10-win season since 2011 while the 49ers are back to being an also-ran in the National Football League.

Jed York

For 49ers owner Jed York, he sided with the Baalke on the decision to fire Harbaugh and it is a move that has come back to bite him in the rear end. York and Baalke are prime examples of when an employer doesn’t truly value an employee that is under him/her as they feel that it is all about their system instead of what the individual actually brings to the table.

Harbaugh was and is a bit eccentric; which is a quality that most geniuses possess. But Harbuagh provided the 49ers team with was structure, accountability, and a winning attitude which is something that they had lacked for quite some time. During Harbaugh’s tenure with the 49ers, he won the NFC West Title with Alex Smtih as his quarterback who was a player that had never been able to previously accomplish anything in the National Football League. Harbaugh was then able to get to the Super Bowl with Colin Kaepernick as his quarterback, and in the process, he turned the young Kaepernick into a star. But without Harbaugh as his head coach this year, Kaepernick found himself benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert who up until this point of his NFL career was a bust. Harbaugh pushed his players with the 49ers, but he made them better as he challenged them to become better which was evident by their decline this past season.

Now that the 49ers are back to square one as they’ll once again be on the prowl for a head coach, York can’t expect his uncle (Eddie DeBartolo) who previously owned the Niners to get him out of the jam that he has created. The 49ers have a state-of-the-art facility in Levi’s Stadium that’s only highlight will be that it is the site of Super Bowl 50 next month as their team is putrid.

The Niners replaced Harbaugh with a man in Tomsula that is not qualified to be a head coach in the National Football League, and he’ll more than likely catch on with another team in the league as a defensive line coach which is something that he excels at. But as the process has begun for the 49ers to find another head coach, they will more than likley be starting over at the quarterback position being that the team will more than likely move on from Kaepernick as a new head coach will probably be ready to start fresh with a new signal caller. The spirit and togetherness that was created under Harbaugh is gone just as quick as it was established which means that the 49ers next head coach will have his hands full attempting to turn things around.

Harbaugh hasn’t had a problem trolling the 49ers organization as he went to Twitter to discuss the firing of social media. And while the 49ers find themselves left out in the cold watching the playoffs this month, Harbaugh soaked up the sunshine of Orlando, Florida as he led Michigan to 41-7 victory in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day over the Florida Gators. The Niners are now prepping to pick very early in the 2016 National Football League Draft, but Harbaugh is prepping his team in Ann Arbor for what could be a run at the national title next season. But I guess that victories and a head coach like Harbaugh that has an old-school work ethic isn’t important to York and Baalke who already looked foolish for firing him, but they simply added to it when they gave up on Tomsula.
