Adrien BronerOn December 14, 2013 Adrien Broner walked into the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas as an extremely confident man. Broner arrived in Texas with an unblemished professional record of 27-0 and also in possession of the WBA Welterweight Title. Several hours later Broner left the Alamodome with a severely swollen jaw and without his title belt. Broner was not robbed or assaulted on the streets of San Antonio, but he was thoroughly beaten in the boxing ring by Marcos Maidana. Broner entered the fight extremely cocky and over confident while Maidana was hungry with a chip on his shoulder. From the opening bell Maidana was the aggressor and by the second round Broner had touched the canvas for the first time in his professional career as the result of Maidana’s left hook. Maidana would knock Broner down once more in the 8th round as he completely dominated the bout.

According to Showtime stats, Broner landed 149 punches while Maidana connected on 269. When the dust settled and judges scorecards were tallied, Stanley Christodoulou scored the fight 115-110 in favor of Maidana. Nelson Vazquez scored it 116-109 in favor of Maidana while Levi Martinez called it 117-109 also in favor of Maidana.
Some thought that the 24-year old Broner would take another fight before jumping back into the ring with Maidana, but a few days ago Broner decided to exercise his rematch clause. Even with a new strategy for Broner, will it be enough for him to overcome the punching power of Maidana?

Marcos Maidana

In his professional career Broner has used flash and finesse while Maidana is an old-fashioned brawler which is evident by his 31 knockouts as a pro fighter. Broner thought that he could dance around the ring like he did in previous fights, but that wasn’t the case with Maidana. Maidana did a tremendous job of cutting the ring off against Broner who was never able to develop a strategy to combat it. Before Broner knew it he was in for a fight as he had a tiger by the tail in Maidana.
Since Broner moved up to the Welterweight Division he has lacked power. Broner’s first fight at 147 lbs. saw him win the WBA Welterweight Title on June 22, 2013 when he defeated Paulie Malignaggi. Malignaggi has never been known to be a power puncher and I expected Broner to showcase his skills against him. Instead Broner was outworked by Malignaggi as he was lucky to walk away with a controversial split-decision victory to win the WBA Welterweight Title. Broner was once again outworked against Maidana. But unlike Malignaggi, Maidana didn’t lack power and thus he was able to come away victorious.

There isn’t a set date for a rematch between Maidana and Broner as of yet. According to Bleacherreport.com, Golden Boy Promotions which promotes Broner was looking into having these two square off on April 19. Maidana is expecting his wife to give birth to their daughter in March and he his looking to spend some time with his family before beginning his training for a rematch with Broner. Broner’s attitude and arrogance will make it hard for him to face another opponent before taking on Maidana as he will look to eradicate the one blemish from his professional record.

Whenever the rematch will take place, for Broner to secure a victory over Maidana he must become more aggressive. In the first fight against Maidana, Broner laid back early and the man affectionately known as “Chino” took advantage of it. Once Maidana knocked Broner down in the second round he put the youngster in chase mode for the rest of the fight. Like I previously stated, Maidana is a brawler and for Broner to defeat him he is going to have to mix it up with him. Broner has showed us that he cannot take a punch which makes him tailor made for a brawler like Maidana. Broner’s pride will allow him to step back into the ring with Maidana. But barring another controversial decision in favor of Broner, he will once again come up on the short end of the stick against Maidana.
