Hosting The All-Star Game Should Help The Mets Turn Things Around

The rumors are no longer rumors as Major League Baseball commissioner
Bud Selig awarded The 84th All-Star Game in 2013 to The New York Mets.
This will be the first All-Star Game hosted by The Mets since 1964 which
was the first season of Shea Stadium. It is a chance for Mets owners
Fred and Jeff Wilpon to show off their stadium to the baseball world and
more importantly inject some much needed revenue into the franchise.
Since Citi Field opened in 2009 attendance has dipped. In 2009, The Mets
finished seventh in total attendance. Since then they have been a
middle of the pack team as they are currently 15th in attendance for
baseball.

Mets brass has already come out publicly and expressed the desire to
imitate their crosstown-rival New York Yankees by increasing prices
across the board for All-Star festivities. The Yankees famously spiked
prices in 2008 when they hosted The All-Star Game and nobody seemed to
complain. The Midsummer Classic should also bring excitement back to a
Met fan base that needs a jolt.
The Mets were forced to cut payroll after the fallout of a Ponzi scheme
by Bernie Madoff. The Wilpons were accused of making a profit while
other clients of Madoff lost large sums of money. The Wilpons have by
their claim that they lost money as well. Due to this, The Mets were
forced to part ways with longtime fan favorite shortstop Jose Reyes
after last season which stung to the core with every Met fan.
Currently The Mets are above .500 and they are starting to give fans
some hope for the future. Mets third baseman David Wright has a .399
batting average on the season as he is flirting with being the first
player to hit .400 for a season since Hall of Famer Ted Williams did it
in 1941. The Mets have young players such as outfielders Lucas Duda and
rookie Kirk Nieuwenhuis who have been pleasant surprises for manager
Terry Collins. Duda is tied for second on the team with home runs at
four while Nieuwenhuis has a surprising .292 batting average on the
season. If The Mets can stay relevant heading into August and if Wright
can maintain a batting average above .375, it should bring fans to Citi
Field.
As for The All-Star Game next season, most likely Wright will be the
lone Met representative and he should be busy. Generally players try to
show off their home park and lure fellow All-Stars to come and play with
them. It won’t be easy for The Mets to lure another bat to Citi Field
with outfield dimensions as deep as The Atlantic Ocean. Maybe Wright can
smooth things out with a starting pitcher to don Met blue and orange?
The Wilpons have seen the worst part of their financial losses behind
them as they were able to sell off small shares of the team to infuse
income. Before the season started I pegged The Mets to lose 94 games,
but know that Madoff is in the rear-view mirror and The All-Star Game is
coming to Queens, The Mets should be able to compete real soon in The
National League.
