None of us our surprised that The New England Patriots released six-time
Pro Bowl receiver Chad Ochocinco. In his one season with The Patriots,
Ochocinco looked out of place. Ochocinco only totaled 15 receptions for
276 yards and one touchdown with The Patriots. Ochocinco was never able
to get on the same page with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and once he
was unwilling to re-negotiate his contract, Patriots head coach Bill
Belichick had no problem parting ways with number 85. Brady will be the
best quarterback that Ochocinco ever plays with, but the former Oregon
State receiver still has some juice in those 34-year old legs. His
11,059 receiving yards are 26th on The National Football League’s
all-time list but his antics might scare some people off. As much as
Ochocinco jokes around, he works hard at his craft but it just didn’t
pan out for him last season in New England the way that it did for him
during his time as a member of The Cincinnati Bengals. Still there are
some teams that could use the services of Mr. Ochocinco.
1. Washington Redskins
Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan
went out and drafted Robert Griffin III as his franchise quarterback
this year. The problem now arises that The Redskins really don’t have
that much depth at the wide receiver position. Ochocinco isn’t the
player that he once was with The Bengals, but he could give Griffin III a
dependable target on the outside.
2. St. Louis Rams
The Rams drafted quarterback Sam
Bradford with the first overall selection in 2010 and have to yet to
provide him with dependable receivers. The team let wide receiver
Brandon Lloyd walk in free agency and now they are starting over.
Ochocinco would be an upgrade on the roster over Steve Smith, Austin
Pettis, and Danny Amendola.
3. Houston Texans
Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson
is one of the best receivers in The NFL as he consistently puts up Pro
Bowl numbers every season, but he cannot do it by himself. The only
other receiver currently on The Texans depth chart with more than two
years of NFL experience is Kevin Walter. By bringing in Ochocinco,
Texans head coach Gary Kubiak could put him at the slot position or move
Walter there. The Texans are on the cusp of making The Super Bowl and
they need to provide quarterback Matt Schaub with as many dependable
players on offense as possible.
4. Atlanta Falcons
In 2011 The Falcons moved up in the first round of The NFL Draft to
select Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Julio Jones. Jones had a
phenomenal rookie year with 96 receptions and 959 receiving yards. Once
you pair Jones with Pro Bowl receiver Roddy White, Atlanta has the best
receiver combination in The NFC South. If The Falcons were to take a
look at Ochocinco, it would be to give quarterback Matt Ryan another
target to take pressure off of Jones, White, and tight end Tony
Gonzalez. This could be a go for broke season in Atlanta as they have
already traded for Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel and adding
Ochocinco to the mix would further solidify that notion.
5. San Diego Chargers
For the past five seasons The San Diego Chargers have been one of
the most disappointing teams in The NFL. The Chargers have constantly
teased their fan base with good seasons but they don’t have a Lombardi
Trophy to show for it. Wide receiver Vincent Jackson signed with The
Tampa Bay Buccaneers this off-season leaving a huge void for Chargers
quarterback Philip Rivers. Malcolm Floyd will be the main receiving
target for Rivers along with Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates. The
Chargers signed wide receivers Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal in the
off-season. Ochocinco could still come in and compete as either the
third or fourth receiver which will give San Diego some depth. If you’re
on the field at receiver Rivers will find a way to get you the
football.
